Students in Florida State University’s chapter of Lambda Alpha Epsilon, an association comprised of students interested in careers in law enforcement and related fields, took home multiple awards at the group’s national conference.

The 14-student FSU LAE team, comprised of students in the College of Criminology and Criminal Justice, took home multiple first-place awards in academic competition, overall spirit and a lip sync competition that closed out the conference.

Kenny Bevan, a senior from Orlando, Florida, placed first in the Police Management academic competition. Bevan said FSU’s LAE chapter held practice sessions leading up to the conference.

“I think that we really stood out because of how well prepared we were,” he said. “It felt like that work paid off, so it was really rewarding.”

Students from 20 LAE chapters attended the event, which was held in Long Beach, California earlier this month. The LAE is a criminal justice fraternity within the American Criminal Justice Association.

The trip wasn’t solely practice and competing, as students enjoyed some of the sights of Southern California, including a boat ride to Catalina Island.

The team earned the following awards:

1st Place, Academic Competition, Juvenile Justice: Kaitlin Davis
1st Place, Academic Competition, Police Management: Kenny Bevan
2nd Place Academic Competition, Corrections: Angelina LaMacchia
3rd Place Academic Competition, Human Trafficking: Amber Losciale
3rd Place Firearms Competition: Brian Bustamante, Kenny Bevan, and Lenny DaSilva
Spirit Award: to the team demonstrating commitment, positivity and uniting others.
