Professor Honored With ASC Early Career Award

The College of Criminology & Criminal Justice is pleased to announce that Associate Professor Joseph A. Schwartz is this year’s recipient of the Early Career Award from the BioPsychoSocial Division of the American Society of Criminology (ASC).

This prestigious award recognizes an individual who has made a significant contribution to scholarly knowledge on BioPsychoSocial criminology within 6 years of receiving their doctoral degree. The BioPsychoSocial division of ASC aims for a genuine integration of biological, psychological, and social factors in the understanding and treatment of antisocial behavior, including delinquent and criminal behavior.

“We are extremely pleased to see this honor for Dr. Schwartz,” said Dean Thomas Blomberg. “Although he has only been with the College a short time, he has brought and will continue to bring outstanding recognition to the College and the field.”

This is Dr. Schwartz’s first year with the College. Before coming to FSU, he was an Associate Professor in the School of Criminology and Criminal Justice at University of Nebraska at Omaha.

Dr. Schwartz is currently serving as the Co-director of the College’s Biosocial Criminology Research & Policy Institute. Additionally, he serves as  a founding member and current executive officer of the Biosocial Criminology Association.

Dr. Schwartz’s research interests include life-course/developmental criminology, behavior genetics, and biosocial criminology, with a particular emphasis on the combination of biological and environmental influences on the development of criminal behavior.  His work appears in outlets spanning multiple disciplines including CriminologyJournal of Research in Crime & DelinquencyJournal of Quantitative CriminologyCriminal Justice & Behavior, Journal of Youth & Adolescence, Social Science & Medicine, Journal of Adolescent Health, and Developmental Psychology. His research has also been featured in multiple media outlets including CNN, US News & World Report, NPR, Scientific American, and The Huffington Post.

The College congratulates Dr. Schwartz on this well deserved honor along with his outstanding work in the discipline.
