On Friday, Sept. 30, the College of Criminology & Criminal Justice rolled out the welcome mat for Parents Weekend. Parents were invited to visit Student Services in Eppes Hall for complementary refreshments and gift bags. While picking up their treats, parents were greeted by members the College’s advising staff and invited to take information on the College and the programs it offers.

On Friday, Sept. 30, well known corporate leader and author Albert J. Dunlap will be signing copies of his latest book Mean Business: How I Save Bad Companies and Make Good Companies Great.

FSU College of Criminology & Criminal Justice Professor Dan Mears was featured as a guest columnist in the Sept. 10 issue of the Orlando Sentinel. In the article, Dr. Mears addresses the Department of Justice’s unprecedented step of seeking to terminate all federal private-prison contracts. He discusses if the decision is sound, if states should follow suit, and ultimately, the need for credible research. 

On Sept. 9, the Criminology Development Council held the 2016 Hall of Fame Celebratory Dinner at Hotel Duval in Tallahassee, Fla. The event was held to honor alumni of the College of Criminology and Criminal Justice who have demonstrated outstanding professional accomplishments, service to the College, Florida State University, and their communities. Five alumni were honored at this year’s event. 2016 Distinguished Alumni Award recipients included: Dr. Max Bromley (BS ’72, MS ’73) and Dr. Charles Swanson (BS ’69, MS ’71).

On Aug. 5, members of the College’s Elder Financial Exploitation Research Team met with the St. Joe Company, a Florida-based real estate developer and manager, to share their findings and make recommendations for a new retirement community currently being developed by St. Joe.

Recent College of Criminology and Criminal Justice graduate, Catherine Meadors, was inducted into the Garnet and Gold Scholar Society on Aug. 4. Ms. Meadors was one of 20 Summer 2016 inductees into the Society, which facilitates involvement and recognizes engaged, well-rounded undergraduate students who excel within and beyond the classroom in the areas of leadership, internship, service, international, and research.

Henri Crockett is not your average College of Criminology and Criminal Justice alumnus. Where many criminology students go into law enforcement, corrections, government agencies, or something similar after graduation, Mr. Crockett found himself in the National Football League (NFL).

College of Criminology and Criminal Justice was highlighted as a significant recruitment source for a fraud-detection company. In a recent USA Today article, the College’s graduates, including Amanda Huston and recent graduate Kaitlyn Reichenbach were recognized among the high-quality hires for Pondera Solutions, an emerging high-tech business focused on detecting fraud and waste within government, with offices in Tallahassee, California, and Ohio. The article is available

Criminology Ph.D. student Jennifer Lynne Holmes did not start out intending to be a criminologist. It was her work with at-risk women and children as a court-appointed special advocate and victim advocate that led her to criminology.
