FSU’s College of Criminology and Criminal Justice is proud to announce the addition of Dustin Gummels to its student advising team. Dustin brings several years of experience in assisting students with professional and career development strategies. As the new Career Advisor, Dustin will provide services that assist students in building their resume, searching for employment, and determining if graduate school is the right path toward achieving their career goals.

Florida State University senior Joseph LaBelle’s passion for Guatemala developed after studying human rights and living in Antigua, Guatemala for four months in May 2012. To complete his Criminology internship requirement, Joseph chose to spend eight and a half months in Chontala, a remote village located in the highlands of Guatemala. He lived in a four-room building attached to a church. The building was somewhat primitive; he cooked his meals over a homemade wood-burning stove and only sometimes had electricity and running water.

Florida State University senior Michael “Eli” Mitrani’s dedication, ambition and educational pursuits position him well to reach his professional goal of working in national security — about which he can’t say much due to the nature of that profession. “I just know I want to work for the federal government,” the dual criminology and psychology major said. “I’m interested in doing criminal investigations.” And that’s nearly all the detail one can get out of Mitrani about his future goals. His ideal job in international affairs and law enforcement requires extreme secrecy.

Eleven members of the Florida State community were recognized for their contributions to distance learning during the 2012-2013 Distance Learning Awards Ceremony Nov. 13. The event was held in conjunction with National Distance Learning Week. “At Florida State, we strive to create the same level of quality learning for our distance students that their on-campus counterparts enjoy,” said Susann Rudasill, director of the Office of Distance Learning.

Racial segregation in America is lasting longer than anyone expected. The average black person lives in a neighborhood that is 45 percent black, even though blacks represent only 13 percent of the population, according to professors John Logan and Brian Stults at Brown and Florida State University. Logan and Stults analyzed 2010 Census data with a dissimilarity index, which determines the percentage of one group that would have to move to a different neighborhood to eliminate segregation, to explore racial segregation. A score above 60 shows very high segregation.

FSU administrators have approved the implementation of the 3+3 program, an accelarated program jointly administered by the College of Criminology and Criminal Justice and the FSU College of Law. The program allows qualified students to receive their bachelor’s degree from Criminology and juris doctorate degree from the College of Law in just six years.

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — At 37 years old, Gemma Burlakoff became one of three women to die at the hands of their spouse or partner in Palm Beach County in October, a month dedicated to domestic violence awareness. Nicole Bishop is the director of victim’s services in Palm Beach County. She said calls for crimes related to domestic violence are on the rise. “It’s heartbreaking and we just want it to stop,” she said. Bishop said between 2009 and 2011 there were 40 domestic violence homicides.

The Department of Computer Science can now award more than $3.2 million to students studying computer science, computer criminology, computational biology, information security, and computer and network system administration through scholarships.

During their academic career, students are faced with many choices. For Criminology and Criminal Justice students, the decision to attend graduate school or pursue a career is one of the most difficult decisions to make. Pursuing a graduate or professional degree requires a significant investment of time and resouces and a commitment to academic excellence.
